In 1885, Tempe was the site for the Territorial Normal School that trained teachers for teaching in Arizona’s schools. Once a small agricultural community, Tempe began to grow after World War II as veterans and others moved to the city. It is also the home of Arizona State University, one of the nation’s largest campuses with an enrollment of about 50,000 students. The university baseball team has won three national championships and has included such famous players as Barry Bonds and Reggie Jackson.
